Our students are all recently-arriving refugees and immigrants with no or limited English. They spend a year at the Newcomer Program, taking regular classes and learning English. We serve grades 2-11 and currently have about 16 languages. We're a small program but we come up against some very real challenges including delayed, interrupted, or no formal education, severe trauma, and the struggle of reunification in the US with family members our students haven't seen in a long time. Our students are excited to learn and they bring such humor and life to our building. With the challenges we face, I'm always amazed at how eager our students are to learn and what they bring to the experience here at the Newcomer Program. We help each other to thrive and everyone who visits comments on our culture. We're accepting of all religions, genders, ethnicities, and nationalities and working here truly is a humbling experience.
