Non-fiction novels are particularly interesting for my learners. They are attracted to a connection to life, character and personal growth, even if they don't realize it. Struggle, purpose and life goals are a definite concentration in a 16+ year old teenager. There are so many influences in their lives, and especially in front of their faces with media, I'm always grateful to be able to put a controlled tool in front of them that they can embrace and digest. Students will read, digest, embrace and grow as people after reading these novels. It will enable them to have intelligent conversations with others on topics that are not just residing on the surface and challenge them on a personal level as well. I plan to integrate a creative project with The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and The Glass Castle: A memoir to help tap into their more artistic sides also.
