This request for this new seating is less about the comfortable seats than it is about creating a flexible learning center within a whole class environment. These bean bag chairs will be used to form an independent meeting space within the classroom for student discussion. In addition, they are movable and can be used to create a comfortable reading space for an individual student anywhere in the room. According to Edutopia, "Flexible spaces, educators agree, alter the fundamental dynamics of teaching and learning, giving students more control and responsibility, improving academic engagement." Reading today has a great deal of competition for students' free time and so developing student readers by increasing their engagement and developing their confidence through choice and independence is crucial. When observing reading classrooms with this type of flexible seating, I have noticed excellent group discussions occurring where students feel more comfortable to share their ideas than at traditional desks. In addition, creating multiple, unique, and flexible learning centers within the classroom, reduces the distraction of multiple discussions or activities going on at once. This allows for greater small group instruction and learning. When using these chairs to create this type of environment in my classroom, it is my hope to develop my students' positive attitudes towards reading and their life-long learning!
