Children come into my second grade classroom with a wide range of developmental strengths and needs, and each child's individual personality and learning style is honored. My students receive time to be active in their learning environment so they can try things out and discover answers for themselves. I emphasize the importance of learning through reading. We have an extensive classroom library that is mostly fiction. Through 25 years of experience I found that students learn best when they care about what they're learning and have opportunities to practice and safely make mistakes in a caring environment. Optimal learning experiences happen best in a positive social context. I closely observe how my children treat each other and reinforce respect and caring as the basis for all interactions.I strive to build a friendly and supportive classroom community to make school a safe and joyful place to learn.
