As a math teacher, I inspire to have an innovative classroom, but often find it difficult because it is a laborious task to represent mathematical thinking using a keyboard. I would like to enhance my instruction by introducing Livescribe to my students. Livescribe is a device that is able to capture written work and voice at the same time. I picture my students using Livescribe to create pencasts of their problem solving. Not only will students practice their mathematical communication, but I can share the pencasts with other students that may be struggling. Students will be inspired to explain their reasoning because they would be working towards creating a product. Getting students to communicate how they solve problems is always difficult. Allowing students to collaborate in pairs to problem solve, plan how to explain their thinking, and then to execute a polished explanation will improve students use of mathematical vocabulary. This will be especially helpful for my large population of English Language Learners. Currently, I have a "technology nook" that has a mounted television with Chromecast and a few laptops available for student use. Unfortunately, the space does not courage collaboration because they are working at individual desks. I would like a bullet-shaped table with 5 student chairs so students have an environment to collaborate. Additionally, I see whiteboards, Post-its, and tracing paper all as a means for students to brainstorm and develop their thoughts about different problems. Last spring, 41 out of my 103 students scored below standard for "Communicating Reasoning" on SBAC. Nearly 40% of my students showed they are unable to clearly express themselves using academic vocabulary. My goal is to increase the number of students at or above the standard for "Communicating Reasoning" by 10% this year by having students work together to thoroughly develop explanations.
