STEM education is essential in preparing students for today’s world of non-stop innovation. By learning how to code in our elementary classrooms, students will begin to develop computer science skills that will help them with many careers. By coding with robots in the classroom, students can explore many different learning pathways. I love watching my students' passions grow in the subjects that they never knew they would love. Unfortunately, because of state testing, science is put on the back burner. It is time to bring the STEM initiative to the forefront of our classrooms and show kids that learning can be creative, innovative and enjoyable. With this project my students will be able to use an iPad app that is connected to Wonder Workshop’s Dash the robot. They will code to make the robot move, talk, light up and interact. We will use the robot Dash for students who are still learning the concepts of coding. To differentiate coding in my classroom and increase rigor, students who are more skilled in coding will used the Wonder Workshop’s Cue Robot for coding. Each day in my classroom we have an hour of coding where students code on their computers through various websites. During this time, I want to create a hands-on approach to coding through the use of these robots. 1/10 schools are currently teaching computer science in their curriculum. How are we preparing our students for their futures if we are not teaching these vital skills? It has been proven that coding and robotics help increase reading and math skills among students as well. Coding and Robotics can be a launching pad for students to realize their passions and help create strong STEM leaders that will be prepared for millions of jobs
