Reading is one of the most important skills that a person will acquire in their lifetime. Early reading skills directly relate to future academic success. Too many of my students struggle to read at grade level or are reluctant to read at all. It's a challenge every day to do what I can to remove the social stigma associated with students who read for entertainment and to get a book in as many students' hands as possible. In addition, students are more likely to read longer and improve their comprehension when they have choice and variety in their learning environment. By donating to this project, you will be helping to provide my students with current reading materials and flexible seating, which will promote reading and comprehension. Teens today are exposed to more information than any generation before them, a lot of which is too mature for their young minds. Young adult novels contain realistic teen characters who must deal with difficult social issues that students can relate to. By reading about characters making difficult decisions and learning from their mistakes, students will be more emotionally and socially equipped to deal with these issues in their own lives. Providing flexible seating to students allows them to take charge of their learning. My classroom has become a place where students want to be. After sitting in a desk, sometimes all day long, they look forward to cozying up on my couch or sprawling out on the floor with a good book. Instead of reading being a tedious chore that they are forced to complete for a grade, it becomes a stress reliever and place to escape the stress and pressure they constantly feel.
