There may still be snow on the ground, but an indoor greenhouse, thermometer, germinating supplies and seeds will allow us to begin growing our own plants for our school garden. First graders will be involved in the whole process from planting the seeds to monitoring the growth and needs of our plants. In the spring, students will transplant our vegetables, herbs, and flowers that we have nurtured from seeds into our new raised garden beds located near the playground for the whole school to enjoy. Each first grader will also bring one of the little plants home to share with his or her family. Our school encourages students be healthy and promotes good nutrition. As we tend our garden, students will be invited to taste and smell what we produce. Students are more likely to try new fruits and vegetables if they participated in growing them. During the summer, the first grade students and their families will volunteer to water the school garden, harvest, and enjoy any ripe produce. Finally, each fall the new class of first graders will harvest the remaining produce and make salsa. The salsa will be shared with the second graders to thank them for all of their work in planting and caring for the garden. Any leftover produce and herbs will be donated to the school cafeteria for everyone to enjoy! With your help, our existing garden will have two new raised beds for a wider variety of planting options, plant supports, and a composting bin for students to recycle cafeteria food waste to produce nutrient rich soil. By composting and growing our own plants from seeds indoors, students will not only have more hands-on opportunities to learn about growing their own food, but this will help us continue this exciting project for years!
