Every single one of my 5th graders is committed to their education and attends a rigorous charter school in Newark, New Jersey. As the class of 2024, their ultimate goal is to attend the college. In my fifth grade English class, I push students to read and think critically, to write precisely and articulately, to analyze deeply, and to listen and respond to their peers intellectually. In addition to strong academic skills, I work to foster my students' character, particularly their grit and perseverance. Reading is a huge part of our school's culture and I work with 5-8th graders on literacy initiatives. My fifth graders especially love to read. They always have an independent reading book at the ready and use any spare moment to read. They can often be found sharing favorite parts of their books with each other at lunch (and occasionally reminded that reading on the stairs is dangerous).
