I teach at a school in inner city San Diego. Many of my students come from socially and economic challenges outside of school. Almost all of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, but they lack knowledge about making healthy choices and living an active lifestyle. I am working to help them understand the importance of making healthier choices as well as the importance of movement. When I got to Harriet Tubman two years ago, there was no structured physical education program. But despite having small facilities and a dirt field, we have been able to build a great program that is on the right track. The next step is getting students to take accountability for the choices they are making and to help them on their way to a healthy life.
