Our PE class is always looking for new and exciting ways to explore physical fitness and health related concepts. Many of our students are very good at cartwheels, flips and other tumbling activities, but do not have a safe place to practice them on. Other students are wanting to learn how to do those tumbling activities but are afraid to try because we do not have the proper safety equipment. The gymnastics mats will help ensure the safety our our students while exploring new and fun ways to be physically active each day! A gymnastics unit will also contribute to several Nevada K-12 Academic Content Standards. These standards include standards based on safety, 1.2.4, 1.5.4, standards based on locomotor (animal walks on mats) and nonlocomotor skills 1.2.1, 1.5.1, and standards based on understanding basics and moderate elements of movement (2.2.1, 2.5.1). We also play several throwing games (dodgeballs) with our mats that will hit the following standards (1.2.2, 1.5.1). Most important, the mats will be used for our fitness testing unit, which will hit the standards geared toward increasing students health and fitness level (4.2.1, 4.5.1).
