The students in my class will have a wealth of opportunities to learn appropriate social and emotional skills from a library of mentor texts devoted to character development. My students need exposure to good character, examples of kindness, problem solving skills and the safe place practice and discuss appropriate behavior with peers and adults. Each book has been carefully selected for its message and lesson. Weekly my students will do a literature study, journal activities, role playing, and art activities focused on a character trait, life lesson, or social dilemma they may encounter. To reinforce the lessons covered in school there will be an element of home connection included in the weekly activities. Students will meet reading comprehension standards while filling their problem solving tool belt and gaining social emotional development.
