In our 1st Grade classroom we have inherited different chairs from different rooms everywhere in our district. Students are currently sitting in chairs that do not fit their bodies or their potential. If a 1st Grader cannot sit comfortably, this can become a distraction and lead to frustration, lack of focus, and over all negative experiences throughout the day. I am determined to avoid these issues any way I can. Students in my room are constantly moving around and sitting in different areas throughout the day. Often times, students need to bring their chairs with them. With our current chairs, the 1st Graders are too small and not strong enough to move the chairs themselves. Students are also expected to put their chairs on their desks at the end of the day to allow for cleaning. This is a task that many of these 1st Graders simply cannot complete. The chairs are much too heavy and have led to several students suffering minor injuries. The new chairs are designed to be much lighter. In addition to the chairs being too heavy, they are too big. Many of the chairs in our room are adult size. The little 1st Grade bodies are not big enough for these chairs and many students are unable to reach their feet to the floor.
