In my job as a second year school speech therapist working on my Clinical Fellowship, I work in a Title 1 school in South Carolina with thirty-two third, fourth, and fifth graders. I also work with twelve-ninth graders on the district's freshman campus. While each of my students has an Individualized Education Plan that includes speech goals, many of them also have goals to address deficits such as autism, intellectual disabilities, or limited English proficiency. A majority of my students receive free or reduced lunch as well. However, despite their deficits, my students are eager to participate in therapy and they are especially motivated by literature-based speech therapy sessions. As examples, my students are hooked on Pete the Cat books!
