My students are a lot of things. They are engaged explorers, traveling to far-off lands in their reading during language arts. They are historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists in social studies, making hypotheses about ancient humans based on evidence they find. And they are creators, writers, authors, and poets, using words to define themselves and the worlds they live in. But in order to do anything in these domains sufficiently, they need the right language, and the tools to incorporate that language. Right now, I am unable to provide them with those tools, namely, dictionaries. My students lack the experience to know how to find words they do not recognize, and my current supplies are not sufficient to cover the whole class. We work with vocabulary regularly, as having a wide breadth of words to work with, especially content-specific ones, is an important part of developing language skills. I want to give students time to explore language, and dictionaries are a huge part of that. I barely have enough right now to let students share with a partner, and most are working in groups of three. Adding 15 dictionaries would allow me to give students more time to work with them for reading, writing, and social studies alike.
