These books will make a difference in my student’s learning and greatly improve their lives because this book is about a young girl, Charlie, who goes ice fishing at a nearby lake. She catches a fish that will give her a wish in return for freedom. This humorous book revolves around the girl making disastrous wishes, while also dealing with a family crisis involving drugs. Not only is this an engaging fantasy chapter book by acclaimed author, Kate Messner, but this book also ties in with our school’s DARE Program about making safe and healthy choices for ourselves. Making safe and healthy choices is part of the Health Curriculum for fifth grade. We will be reading this book during our read aloud time, and the students will be expected to revisit parts of the book as they write a reflective piece of the book.
