My classroom is a fun filled place of learning for 150 awesome 8th grade students each day. Recognizing that many students' previous experience with history/social studies class is memorizing the names of lots of dead people who did things long before my students were born, I try to jazz things up a bit. We do not use textbooks but learn from analyzing primary sources and participating in as many hands-on projects as we can. We keep interactive notebooks so students are actually creating their own textbooks. Each year I take a survey the first week of school and ask how many students would say history is their favorite class. I typically get 2 or 3 students raising their hands. Asking the same question the last week of school, that number increases to about 12 students. I like to laugh with my students and take a very laid back approach. Even though I'm mom to my own 4 children my students know that they are MY kids!
