Reading shouldn't be the time of day students become discouraged or frustrated. Reading should be a time students enjoy and become excited over. In my classroom everyone is a reader no matter their specific level. Students should be proud and happy about themselves as they begin reading. Building a strong foundation at an early age will help students become stronger and have more self confidence in reading later in life. Students will be able to use the letter tiles, rhyming sort and guided reading books to become confident readers. At the beginning of the year students really struggle connecting letters to sounds. By using the letter tiles students will be able to visually see the letter and put a specific sound to that letter. As the year progresses the students will be able to create real and nonsense words using the letter manipulative sets. Using the rhyming sort will help students see the pictures and determine which words rhyme. Students can use real life pictures and say the names of the pictures out loud. Practicing sorting real pictures will help students knowledge of what is meant by rhyming words. Students will be able to come up with additional words that rhyme without having to have cards in their hands. A big part of our day is spent doing Daily 5 centers and having small groups to complete Guided Reading. Students sit with the teacher and read books on their level during this time. Students are able to read these books and are confident in their reading. The teacher will ask the students questions after they are finished to ensure they understand what they have read. Students read at least two books a day, so there is a great need for as many leveled books as possible.
