I want to empower my students with authentic, meaningful learning experiences that go beyond facts in a book. Despite their varied backgrounds, in true adolescent fashion, my students' worldviews do not extend much beyond the communities they grew up in. Literature is a powerful tool to provide my students with new perspectives and experiences that encourage them to see the world in different ways. The novel Refugee will allow my students to read about the experience of three different young people, from three different periods in history and three different countries of origin. We will use shorter texts and picture books as read alouds and resources in the classroom to further develop our understanding of different experiences, support class discussions and activities, and connect back to our study of history and current events. Students will participate in a culminating experience of a refugee simulation where students will have an opportunity to "walk a mile" in someone else's shoes and reflect on the experience in connection with the literature and informational texts we studied.
