As the school year goes on an amazing thing occurs within the classroom; second-grade readers are beginning to evolve into third-grade readers! It is very evident in the speed that the students are reading, the books that they are reading, and how much they can read. With this, the students are always in need of bigger books that provide entertainment and just enough challenge for them. As they grow in their reading abilities, their variety/level of their books also need to grow. Chapter book series are needed for these students to continue their reading growth and love for reading. I love that these students can become friends with the characters in the series they are reading. They can connect with their characters on so many levels and learn lessons for REAL LIFE, all while strengthening their readings skills and growing confidence in their reading without even noticing it. Students can go on adventures to places they may never get to go with Jack and Annie in the Magic Tree House series. Or they will be able to learn about friendship in Ivy and Bean and The Owl Diaries. These books will provide so much for them!
