Serving students with Special Needs in my classroom requires creative ways to engage all learners. My objective when teaching the Science standards is to open the eyes of my middle schoolers so that they can find the beauty of Science in their everyday observations. When a student comes in from being outside and enthusiastically shows me that the orange that they were eating for lunch is like the layers of the Earth, then I know I have given them a special gift. In our class of budding scientists, we learn about the world around us so that we can learn how to make this world a better place. Having the students set up and maintain an Aquaponics aquarium will tie into so many concepts that are taught throughout the year. They will learn about ecosystems, cell structure and growth, the water cycle, and about how humans affect their environment. Having a real-life example right at their fingertips daily will help all of my students to learn. Not only will they learn Science, but they will learn how to care for a pet and benefit from the relaxing sounds of flowing water. Thank you for your generosity as we raise our next generation of scientists.
