Using hands-on materials in math, particularly in geometry, is essential for deep understanding. When students can manipulate materials or create a model the math concept is illuminated in a concrete way that students can see, touch and better understand. In addition, as students build and create they are collaborating with their peers and working on planning and sharing. I am always amazed at what kindergartners are able to construct using Magna Tiles and Legos. Magna-Tiles and Legos support two of the kindergarten math standards that indicate that students are able to construct shapes and are able to put simple shapes together to make larger shapes. Additionally, because these materials are so exciting, students will play with them all year. Please help us make math fun and play engaging with hands-on materials. With the Magna-Tiles and Legos my students will do the important playing work that builds understanding of important geometry concepts. Thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness, generosity, and support of play in school!
