I teach in the diverse, urban community that I grew up in. My students represent a wide array of ability levels. They are bright, eager, friendly and inquisitive youngsters, who are eager to learn and succeed despite some of the challenges that each of them face when it comes to learning successfully. They are used to producing projects with few/ limited resources. Collectively, they have demonstrated a genuine interest in poetry. Many find it to be a positive form in which to express their individual thoughts and emotions. They do, however, sometimes become frustrated when the intent or meaning of their poem becomes lost or clouded when choosing appropriate and effective rhyme to express their thoughts and emotions. My students are deep, creative thinkers with many insightful ideas. Poetry is a perfect medium for many of my students to demonstrate effective and successful writing techniques. They are enthusiastic and eager to succeed. I am so proud to serve as their teacher.
