Many of my students are new readers, and have yet to learn how captivating and transforming their reading experience can be! With so many incomplete book series, old and run-down books, and books with outdated subject matter in our classroom library, it isn't much of a surprise that my students sometimes struggle to become excited about reading. I can teach my students how to become good readers, but in order for them to enjoy the process it takes for them to become the best reader they can be, they need to have books available that can excite, interest, surprise, and ultimately engage them. The materials I have selected are all books that I, and my students, believe would make an excellent addition to our classroom library. The Elephant and Piggy books, as well as the Pigeon book series, provide easy to read stories that my struggling readers can understand and actually enjoy. They can move from "See Jane run" story lines to "A pigeon is driving that bus!" The hamster story books like The World According to Humphrey and Max and Mo Go Apple Picking will excite my on grade level readers because they are relevant- we have a pet hamster in our class! (I don't know if any child wouldn't want to sit down with a book that allows them to imagine what our own hamster might be doing during our daily lessons.) The Ivy and Bean book series is ones that many of my students ask about constantly! Our district provided me with only 2 books from series, so I imagine those in my class who have started to read these will be so thrilled to follow Ivy and Bean through the rest of their adventures.
