Students are visual learners and love read-alouds. Although they are provided with math manipulatives to learn various mathematical topics, using anchor texts to introduce topics can make a huge difference in developing or activating their prior knowledge. These books will not only continue to provide literacy opportunities to students throughout the year, but also enhance their understanding of basic math concepts. Making connections across text or academic content areas is something teachers strive to do on a daily basis, but it isn't the easiest task to accomplish. Having a library of math-centered picture books would be a huge resource for any classroom!
