For a culminating project on fractions, students will work together in small groups to mix up real-life recipes. In this project they will use their understanding of converting, adding, and subtracting fractions to make real recipes for a class snack. These lessons will be integrated with health as students learn about making healthy choices in nutrition. We will also use these measuring supplies in future math and science units. The durability of these supplies ensures that fourth graders for years to come will have the opportunity to put their understanding of fractions to good use! Your investment in this project is an investment into the math mindset of these students. Many students have negative or anxious feelings towards math, but a hands-on project is just what they need to change their perspective and see that math is fun! The fraction tiles included in this project will provide support for students who struggle to convert fractions, and determine equivalent fractions.
