A classroom aquarium provides an opportunity for scientific discussion, responsibility and serenity. My class spends an entire unit on understanding DNA through Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). Having a class set of Glo Fish to reference and see, promotes genuine curiosity. My students have studied the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) extracted from a jellyfish. This isolated protein has been genetically engineered into cats, mice, and more commonly, Glo Fish. This provides a visual reference that would help solidify the concept of Genetically Modified Organisms. A visual reference inspires visible growth, curiosity and engagement in students. A classroom aquarium also provides a calm and serene environment for learners who struggle with anxiety or attention issues. This classroom aquarium would help develop ownership, familiarity and comfort, and ultimately improve our collective learning.
