Our transition-age special education students focus mainly on job skills, and we are always looking for real jobs that they can complete in our school. Even students who are not at the transition age can start learning vocational skills. One of the teachers in our program came up with the idea for a coffee cart business run by the students with a variety of special needs. Teachers will order their drinks in the morning and be collected by different students. The students will then make the drinks using Keurig machines or a coffee machine and deliver the coffee to specified locations at specific times. On certain occasions, we will also have pastries offered to them. By having our students participate in the coffee cart, they are learning important vocational skills that will hopefully help them get a job and become productive citizens within our community. The students are also gaining confidence and learning social skills that will help them maintain positive relationships with both teachers and peers. These skills special education students obtain help with skills they are learning in their classroom. They learn to budget, plan, and manage. Something that is not as easy to learn in the classroom.
