Oftentimes, the study of U.S. history focuses on a people that my students cannot understand. Research shows that when students are surrounded by books filled with characters and people who don't look like them, then they will feel disconnected. Instead, a more effective strategy is to provide students with a wide range of resources about the diverse group of people who contributed to American history. The purpose of this project is to give my students historical books about people with the same ethnic background, culture, gender, and age as them. These books will help me create a culturally relevant classroom where my students feel welcome and comfortable learning about a wide range of historical figures and experiences. Books like "Black Heroes of the American Revolution" and "The Displacement of Native Peoples" provide a variety of cultural experiences. Books from the "Who Were" series will give all my students a story to connect with and will help them learn about U.S. history in a new way. All of these books will be used to give students a view of how many different people contributed to the history of our country!
