The text, "Bud, Not Buddy," by Christopher Paul Curtis, will act as a mentor text. Students will be able to use their individual copies of the book to annotate on character development, figurative language, word choice and structure and meaning. Students will use the text as a model to help answer the following questions, "What are rules to live by? How do people communicate these 'rules'? " As students read, they will use post it notes to mark the text, write gist notes and identify any unfamiliar words. This will then lead them to identify the role of social, political, and cultural interactions and how they support the development of identity.
