A central goal of my English classroom is to instill a love of reading in all students. I hope each student will develop an identity as a reader, not just of required academic texts, but of the stories that enrich our lives if we escape high school with a desire to read still intact. One of my main biggest tasks is connecting students with stories that awaken the reader within. Our students are refugees and immigrants from all over the world, and our library doesn't sufficiently reflect the diversity of our student body. All the YA books I've requested feature main characters of color, whose backgrounds are as varies as those in my classes, and whose stories underscore the universal elements of adolescent experience and the specific trials and triumphs of living as a person of color in the 21st century.
