First grade is THE year to develop strong reading skills. We are so excited as we are learning to read, but we need some things to help us keep the room organized and keep the learning fun. We have a few needs to help us on our reading journey. The shelves will be used to store students' book boxes. The boxes will hold their literacy skill work, current reading materials, word study journals, and poetry notebooks. Being able to easily find a book box and get to work saves time for the student and creates a more pleasant learning environment. The other items on the list will all be used during our literacy block. The whisper phones (I refer to them as "whisper-ma-phones") are used during "Read-to-Self" time. First graders need to read out loud...but 20 students reading out loud can be overwhelming! The phones allow students to read aloud and hear themselves, while keeping the noise level low. The other goodies will be used to identify and learn our high frequency words.
