There is no doubt that in this changing world, the way students learn and develop is also changing. The seating options in my current classroom, however, are much the same as they were when I was a student. My 4th graders can sit at a table in a uniformly sized chair or on the carpet. Research has shown that students who are given the opportunity to choose from a variety of seating options are more engaged in the learning, feel a sense of empowerment, exhibit increased scores on state assessments, and are generally healthier both physically and emotionally. My students will learn to make choices based on how they learn best, while at the same time developing social skills such as cooperation and personal responsibility when they work in groups. Seating options such as the requested wobble stools promote better blood flow, improve core strength, and increase metabolism. Lap desks will provide students with the option to work on a cushion on the floor or on the couch, creating a sense of calm for many students and allowing them to better focus. The more students are able to move, the more alert and focused they will be. I have sat in the same seats as my students and found them to be terribly uncomfortable. If wouldn't choose to sit in them, how can I ask my students to?
