My students are your typical middle school students -- rambunctious, curious, eager explorers -- and like all other students their age, easily drift into daydreams if not active participants in a lesson. This is an especially challenging age to keep focused and motivated, which is why hands-on, inquiry-based lessons are so important. My students come from economically diverse households, although over 90% of our school population qualifies for free (or reduced price) lunch through the Federal Lunch Program. Many of my students have not had access to early science education, and for some, 7th grade is the first time they engage in science laboratory activities.
