I have 25 kindergarteners in my inclusion class. I teach in a Title I, At-Risk school with high transiency. Nearly 90% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and more than two-thirds of my students are English Language Learners. While the families of my students generally want to help out as much as they can, they are often limited by time, resources or English speaking skills. My students do not come to school with experiences similar to mine at that age. Most of my students’ families are focused on meeting the family’s basic needs, which often still is not attained, so the time and resources are not available for extras. I have to be able to teach my students and fill the gaps left from poverty, exposing them to things that they otherwise may not be exposed to.
