Due to a wide range of family scenarios, my students often have difficulty getting to school, let alone arriving with a healthy and fueled mind and body. Many of my students come hungry and although our school provides breakfast and lunch, my students often opt out. They rarely eat lunch because many of them do not have the means to bring food from home. Due to district-wide insufficient funds, our cafeteria is forced to serve low-quality and exclusively pre-packaged and processed food. My students often go without eating unless I can provide a snack/s throughout the day. I can usually encourage a few of them to get something for breakfast, but in these first few weeks of school, I have also been supplementing that with fresh fruit and/or granola bars out of my own pocket because I believe basic nutrition is foundational for success. Denying our bodies of proper nutrition only allows for disengagement, restlessness, anxiety, and possible outbursts of anger, all of which do not promote learning. My one wish for my boys is that they find success in life, whatever that means for them. Please consider donating to this project to help me provide my amazing students with healthy fuel for their minds and bodies!
