These flexible seating options will allow students with sensory needs and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder to quietly receive sensory stimuli in the classroom setting, while still allowing them to maintain attention to the academic task at hand. Many of our students struggle with sensory issues, and allowing them to have quiet options that they can utilize in the classroom for seating, will help them to be more focused and on task during instructional and independent work blocks. These students are typically the students that you see as "active" students in the classroom - the ones who struggle to stay in their seats, but yet need physical stimulation to help them stay on task. Allowing our students access to different options for seating will allow us to best work with the students to make sure that they can be successful in the school setting. Giving them a quiet, physical outlet that is more "typical" to do in class rather than distracting other students by constantly getting up from their chairs, rocking back on 2 legs of the chairs, or standing and leaning over the tops of the desk, will allow the students to be more successful in the classroom and to be redirected less by the teachers because they have an acceptable outlet for their sensory needs.
