Throughout history and across cultures, there is a common "language of art" that makes up every artwork. My students will learn the lingo and see how these elements of art, line, color, light and shadow, pattern, texture, and shape, have been used by artists over centuries. These elements, along with a little imagination, have helped artists create masterpieces that have stood the tests of time. My students will discover, through the help of the museum docents, how the elements of art have developed from the pre-Renaissance to today. The Birmingham Museum of Art has a cafe, Oscar's Cafe, inside the center of the museum. I can only imagine the looks on their faces when they see the grand artwork and the sculpture garden outside the giant windows of the museum. They will dine with white table cloths and have a lesson from the chef on manners and etiquette at a fine dining restaurant. This is such an amazing opportunity for these young artists.
