My students are all newcomers to the United States, most of whom having been here less than three years. They are motivated, thoughtful and curious young people who are not only invested in learning a new language and a new culture, but are also navigating what is for them an entirely new educational system. Most of them, by necessity, work most evenings yet have excellent attendance records. In this regard, they are the hardest working students in the entire school! Although life in the U.S. for them can be daunting and frustrating at times, I am always impressed by their humor, their mental toughness, and their tenacity. Their optimism and resiliency is truly inspiring.
