My second-language, high-need students are never exposed to hands-on STEM activities that try to solve real world problems. This causes them to be at a disadvantage with other students. My students will be using their artistic abilities to create a roof structure that will withstand the heavy weight of snow. This activity will improve my students thinking and reasoning skills and will allow underrepresented groups (girls) to explore STEM concepts through the use of hands on materials. Snow causing roofs to collapse is a major problem in our area. So this project -based STEM challenge uses students artistic designs to try and solve this real world problem.
