About my class

Our student population has an extremely high percentage of children that are not performing on or near grade level. In addition to educational deficits, my students live in the concrete jungle, cut off from nature. Many suffer from depression and anxiety due to home life. Gardening can improve all of these maladies, and more as well. By attaining trowles, shovels and gloves, my students will be able to clean up some previously constructed raised beds and plant vegetables for our community. We are teamed up GVI (Green Village Initiative), who will supply us with plant material! Gardening removes walls that stop many students from accessing knowledge, due to their learning style. Research has proven that hands- on and experiential learning, like in a garden program, provide real life applications, build self-esteem and help to teach children a positive, life long skill that is a natural de-stresser. The basic tools that I am requesting will help start my students onto a potential path of gardening, eating and living healthy and give them a connection to their land.
