In 2nd and 3rd grade we study the life cycle of plants. Previously we have attempted to experience it by growing vegetables and flowers all year long. In the winter, our classroom does not get much light. While it showed the students how much light is important to the growth process, the plants did not grow well during the winter months and we were unable to observe the cycle in it's entirety. The grow lights would enable my students to explore the marvel of growing all year long, and allow our plants to grow large enough to bear fruit and flowers. We would be able to grow healthy, full size plant starts. With this opportunity my students will be able to study the plant cycle more deeply as they observe and record real time data of the growth and progression of plants. Additionally, the intention is to shift the paradigm of food value from consumption to production. The goal is to enroll students in seeing and respecting the effort that goes into the production of the vegetables and fruit that we eat daily. The Garden Fish tank is a mini aquaponics ecosystem that would allow students to observe and understand how plants and aquatics can co-exist to help each other. This would further deepen their understanding of a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. These items would be used daily for many years to come. Hands on learning sticks. It makes impressions and leaves learning residuals that become life habits. That is the intention of this project.
