Too many young people, especially in cities like Oakland, fail to triumph in school, not because they are apathetic, unsupported, or don’t care about their education but because they have not found a way to fit into the “school box” we have constructed for them. Project Engage is an attempt to expand the walls of that box. The charter school at which I teach holds the mission of preparing every single student who enters our doors to be successful in college and beyond. We are successfully serving most of our students towards reaching that goal – but not all of them. Project Engage begins with the premise that hyper-investing in the academic success and emotional well-being of our most disengaged learners will both transform those individuals as well as creating a significant shift in whole-school academic culture. Hyper-investing will take the form of mandatory after-school study sessions, one-on-one mentorships, home visits, and monthly beyond-the-classroom excursions.
