We are fortunate to teach and learn at a historic high school, but many of our scholars are unaware of that history, or even the history of our local community. Local history often gets neglected in high school history and civics courses that focus on national and global studies. We will use Color & Character as a foundation text for a scholar-led exploration of school and local history. It will also supplement a study of the Civil Rights Movement at both the local and national levels. Scholars will use this knowledge to initiate local oral history and service learning projects.
