Classroom cooking allows students to practice a wide variety of skills in an activity which they find fun and motivating. Within the cooking activity I embed science and math skills, including measurement, equations, math terminology, states of matter, physical vs. chemical changes, nutrition etc. By design, cooking activities involve reading, sequencing and following directions. Turn-taking and team-work are naturally embedded, and communication and social skills are practiced and reinforced. In addition, cooking and delivery of products provide students with in-school work experience and preparation vital to their transition to adult living . After several years of cooking as part of general curriculum, we began filling requests, such as providing baked goods for senior project presentations. We have even done "mini-banquets" and a classroom cafe! Our previous counter-top oven, which was already second-hand, broke beyond repair. We are barely getting by with a small borrowed unit. As our "demand" has increased, we are faced with the need for a larger capacity, heavy duty counter-top oven, which also meets the fire code. Please help us continue to expand our growth and learning opportunities!
