Research shows that students who build their background knowledge tend to have an academic edge and they ultimately become better readers after being exposed to diverse topics. High-interest magazines, especially those aligned to the curriculum, tend to entice students to read about topics they may not otherwise explore. Because the science and historical topics are presented in an engaging manner in these magazines, they keep students' interested. The common core aligned skill sheets that come with each of these magazines require students to use close-reading strategies and critical thinking. They will also use their digital reader response journal/blogs to respond to the articles they read. Research shows that writing about what you read also enhances comprehension.
