Layton Elementary has not had a music program in years. When I was hired to be the music teacher, there were few supplies--four small containers of old, small instruments (drums with holes in the lids, recorders that are cracked, bells that are cracked, sandpaper blocks that are worn with the sandpaper peeling off, and triangles without sticks). I would like to have a piano in the classroom for singing time and for teaching the children to play the piano through group music instruction. My principal said she will purchase a classroom set of keyboards for the students but does not have the budget to purchase a piano. The students will benefit greatly from having a piano in the classroom. It will make the music program fun and hopefully help to instill a lifelong love of music for the children. This year, 570 students will be impacted. Roughly that many students will be impacted each year for years to come. In ten years, that would be approximately 5,700 students.
