Imagine being a six year old sitting in a classroom for six hours and having very small choices over where you go all day. You have all this energy and have to sit in an uncomfortable desk trying to do your work. My goal, this year, is to give my students more choices on where they do their independent work by the use of marker spots so they have their own area in the classroom. In order for this to work, I would also need to have a clipboard for each student so they can do their worksheets on their own. I truly believe that implementing choice seating will help with behaviors in my classroom along with helping their knowledge grow. It has been proven, through lots of research, that selective seating helps students test scores grow as they feel more comfortable in the classroom and are able to retain the classroom knowledge. The marker spots will allow each child to pick a spot in the classroom that is their own where they can work on independent work along with using manipulatives in a safe space. Another item I'm hoping to receive would be a beanbag chair to help create a zen zone in my classroom where a student who is getting emotional can have a safe, calm spot to get themselves ready to rejoin the classroom and continue their learning. Issues I have dealt with in my classroom have been when a student gets upset they go towards destructive behaviors which causes the learning to be interrupted. Having a zen zone will stop these issues as the students can ask to go to this area to take a break from what may be causing their anger.
