The world is a big place, especially when you're only 8. I want my students to get out there and experience all the wonder it has to offer. Unfortunately, Alaska is a very isolated place. We even refer to the rest of the United States as "the Lower 48." Traveling to and from Anchorage takes time and, above all, money - something my students' families don't have a lot to spare. Therefore, their world is actually quite small and their life experience are more limited. I would like to utilize Google's free virtual field trip application, Expeditions, to bring the world to my students. Expeditions brings lessons to life, allowing students to visit places like Antartica, Machu Picchu and even Mars, all without leaving the comforts of the classroom. In order to use this app, I need mobile devices for each child. Fortunately, through donations from family and friends, I will have the devices. However, I still need the virtual reality headsets that make students feel as if they're standing at the foot of the Great Pyramids of Giza gazing up, taking in the enormity of the tombs. For classroom management purposes, I've also included an area rug on my supply list. The rug will be our version of a "school bus," giving each student a safe place to sit as we dive into the Great Barrier Reef to gain a deeper understanding of topics like animal adaptations. Last on the list is a class set of whiteboards. These are special whiteboards that allow me to insert different backgrounds for students to write on according to our needs. Though we can use them for other subject areas, the whiteboards will enable students to take notes and give me quick responses to field trip questions. Thanks for your support!
