An average day at work typically involves at least one student experiencing a severe explosive episode, at times lasting up to 3 hours. These explosive episodes are often a PTSD symptom, caused by the experience of complex trauma during childhood. The materials you would be donating to fund would make a difference in my students' lives by assisting in de-escalating these explosive PTSD episodes. A calming space with soft, plush toys provides a safe space for a scared, traumatized child to seek refuge in during a time of fear. Additionally, having a calming safe space teaches these students that there are positive ways to express angry feelings, which will better equip them to succeed upon their return to traditional school. Stress toys such as squishy balls, play dough, putty and legos provide an outlet for anger as well as a calming activity to engage in while he or she prepares to share potentially life changing information with me. Therapeutic, educational books would be beneficial to utilize in the classroom setting to educate my students on important topics such as diversity awareness, anti-bullying, and anger management.
